The HTC U12+ is HTC’s latest flagship device. It is one of the few flagship phones released in 2018 that don’t have a notch. The phone is one of the best when it comes to performance and comes with some unique features worth mentioning.

The U12+ like most phones released in 2018 spots an 18:9 aspect ratio display. It is a 6 inch 1440 x 2880 Super LCD display with 537 pixel-per-inch. It is one of the few phones to have two dual cameras both 8 mega-pixel f/2.0 shooters. The rest of the front is pretty much basic.

Flipped to the back, it has two dual 12 MP f/1.8 and 16 MP f/2.6 cameras above the physical fingerprint scanner. The U12+ has a translucent blue version that reveals a few of the inside components of the phone. This is definitely something new. The other is a ceramic black that doesn’t do the same.

The HTC U12+ also borrowed pressure sensitive functionality HTC calls Edge Sense from the U11. This is something Google used as well in their Pixel 2 phones. Essentially, an action can be triggered by squeezing the sides of the phone. HTC implemented it further in the U12+ by introducing more gestures like double tap on the edges of the phone to enable one-handed mode.

As if that wasn’t enough, the same pressure sensitive technology was also applied to what looks as physical buttons. The HTC U12+ doesn’t actually have physical buttons. What appear as buttons are simply pressure sensitive areas mapped to simulate a physical button tap. A vibration is also triggered to pronounce the simulation. The implementation is however reported not to be responding perfectly in some units with vibration delayed when a button area is pressed. It’s expected to be fixed by a software update.
